Founder, Frank Sands Sr.
In Memoriam
Frank Sands Sr. founded Sands Capital in 1992 and served as the firm’s first CEO and chief investment officer until his retirement in 2008. A veteran of investment research and an early innovator in concentrated growth investing, he built a business guided by a strong and enduring commitment to the firm’s mission: to add value and enhance the wealth of clients with prudence over time. Frank regularly reminded colleagues of this responsibility to clients.
At the firm’s inception, Frank spearheaded the Select Growth Strategy, a concentrated portfolio of 20 to 25 businesses, later expanded to 30. At the time, it was an innovative and novel approach. As part of this, he developed the firm’s six investment criteria, which are still used today. Between 2003 and 2006, Select Growth assets grew tenfold as the market recognized the power of this approach.
By 1997, the firm’s assets under management (AUM) had grown to nearly $150 million, and Sands Capital had earned a strong track record as a concentrated growth investor under Frank Sands Sr.’s leadership. By 2000, Sands Capital reached $1 billion in AUM. That same year, Frank Sands Jr. rejoined the firm as director of research.
Frank Sr.’s legacy extends beyond Sands Capital Management. He was a generous philanthropist focused on education and healthcare. He served on the board at the University of Virginia’s Darden School Foundation and had served earlier on the board of the Virginia Hospital Center Foundation. In 2017, Frank was awarded the Charles C. Abbott award, which is the highest honor bestowed by the Darden School.
